Flexible solution for 2D and 3D cell cultures
While our collagen membranes like the Collagen Cell Carrier® and our fibrous suspension Viscolma® are constituted of preserved complex and insoluble collagen type I fibers, Bovine Soluble Collagen consists of acid-soluble collagen subunits, the tropocollagen molecules. These are hetero-trimers, composed of two alpha1 and one alpha2 polypeptide chains forming a triple-helix of approximately 300 kDa. By pH and temperature shift tropocollagen polymerization to collagen fibrils can be initiated resulting in flexible hydrogels for three-dimensional (3D) cell culture.
The high collagen concentration of approximately 5 mg/ml provides freedom to adjust the optimal gel density for your cells. For your convenience, a protocol for hydrogel generation, optimized for Bovine Soluble Collagen from Viscofan BioEngineering, is provided in the download section.
Bovine Soluble Collagen can also be used as a thin coating for 2D cell culture in any cell culture dish. It provides in-vivo-like conditions to positively influence adherence, growth and differentiation of your cells. The nature-like matrix promotes authentic cell performance and enables novel developments in:
- tissue engineering e.g. of skin, osteogenic, endothelial, hepatocytic and other tissues
- analysis of cell migration, e.g. at metastasis, wound healing or development
In addition, this flexible matrix may be mixed with factors like other ECM components, antibiotics or growth factors, e.g. for directed cell manipulation.
Bovine Soluble Collagen serves also as a bioink for 3D bioprintig. Supplemental cross-linking by the user is also feasible.
